Interview with James Israel Gaither [electronic resource] 2004 February 24 / interviewer: Christina Wright ; transcriber: Chris Campbell.

James Gaither begins his interview by describing his elementary school, Rockwell. He remembers teachers who gave students personal attention and individual time they needed. Gaither proudly details his job of caring for a pot bellied heater as a sixth grader. He views his schools years as a pleasant experience although African American students did not have the advantages of the white students in Charlotte. He believes discipline was unnecessary because students enjoyed school and there was good communications between parents and teachers. May Day in particular held good memories for Gaither. Good memories also came from friendships and relationships in his neighborhood, which was very close knit. Gaither describes an interesting event using a crockersack. Gaither later attended Huntersville High School. He remembers his feelings changing before and after school desegregation, which heightened his awareness.
